Significant Learning Environments: Implementing A New Culture of Learning

I recently had the pleasure of reading A New Culture of Learning by Douglas Thomas and John Seely Brown and the overall experience was incredibly impactful and reassuring that the direction of my innovation plan is headed is a positive one.

My innovation plan is special in that it targets students from disadvantaged communities interested in pursuing a post-secondary education. The importance of running my program in a significant learning environment is critical as it will not only enhance the experience for the learners of the program, but it will have a lasting impact on the way they learn, the skillset they hold, and the way their educators teach (or rather, facilitate).

Students will have opportunities to take ownership of their learning in a way that will directly influence their future. With this in mind, I do not take the responsibility of designing this program and environment lightly. I want to ensure my students and their educators that they will have my support and guidance through this thoroughly researched and proven program.

I am greatly excited to embark on this journey with all those involved, and to adopt some of the learning strategies myself as I build and navigate this process along with them. In the meantime, please enjoy my video regarding my findings and how I plan to implement my major takeaways from this research into my program.
