I thoroughly enjoyed Sir Ken Robinson’s TED talk titled, “Bring on the learning revolution!” I found it utterly inspiring and it transformed my outlook on change in education. Mr. Robinson at one point states something along the lines of, “we don’t need an evolution, but a revolution.” Funny enough, my initial tagline for my personal ePortfolio was “Elevating Education Innovation”… I suppose that will change now.
He discussed that evolution wasn’t enough anymore, that essentially we were reforming a broken system with minor upgrades. Rather, education as a WHOLE needs to be completely restructured. This totally makes sense to me. We live in a world where most anything we could possibly want to know is made available to us at the touch of our fingertips. Teachers no longer truly NEED to TEACH. Rather, they are able to direct students to the knowledge they need to know. Is this enough? Surely not.
So, how do we revolutionize education? How do we create REAL change? By giving students control of their learning. Student lead learning initiatives are the future. Giving students the ability to choose their learning avenue not only ensures they can obtain the base knowledge in a format that best suites them, but additionally drives the student to discover more, move beyond what is already known. I am thrilled to get the opportunity to put into practice some concepts of education revolution and hope that I can make a small impact on this front.
